Slip, Trip, and Fall Prevention Transcript
Did you know rain, slick floors, ice, and snow are some of the most common causes for slips, trips, and falls? And, that 1 in 5 falls results in a fracture or head injury? In fact, there is more than an 80% increase in these types of injuries during the winter months.
To help keep you safe in slippery conditions, this video will provide you with five tips on how to prevent a slip, trip, or fall. These tips include wearing appropriate shoes, using 3 points of contact, identifying designated walkways, using the marching technique, and avoiding rushing.
It might surprise you that one way to avoid slips, trips, and falls starts before you even get to work. It starts when you dress for your day. Always wear uniform compliant, slip-resistant, closed-toe, and closed-heel shoes. If you are an AMXL or RRS DA, make sure your shoes also have a reinforced steel or composite toe. If you are in an area that has signifigant winter weather, Amazon has provided ice cleats. Reach out to your DSP or station team for more information.
Once you are ready to head out on your route, remember to always use 3 points of contact when entering and exiting your vehicle and when walking up and down stairs. If the stairs do not have a handrail, use your best judgement to determine if the delivery can be made safely. If the stairs pose a safety risk, contact the customer to find an alternative safe delivery location. If you can’t reach the customer, contact ‘Driver Support’ directly in the Delivery app for support.
Anytime you exit the vehicle, look for immediate hazards like a curb or uneven pavement. Find a designated walkpath, like a sidewalk or driveway. This is especially helpful if you are using a handtruck that may lose traction. And as always, ensure your line of sight isn’t blocked by packages and that your device is put away.
Another tip to keep you from experiencing a slip, trip, or fall is to use the marching technique. Stand up straight with your eyes forward and take small marching half steps at a slow and steady pace with a full flat foot.
As you are marching, it is important to walk slowly and avoid rushing on your way to and from a delivery point. Walking slowly will allow you time to scan the area and identify slip, trip, or fall hazards.
Most importantly, if at any time you do not feel safe making a delivery or being on the road, call your DSP for guidance. Amazon closely monitors the weather and provides route updates as needed, which you’ll be notified about directly in the Amazon Delivery app and via your DSP Owner.
Stay safe and help reduce your risk of a slip, trip, or fall by following these safety tips.
